When you think of traditional marketing and networking events, distinctive probably isn’t the first word that comes to mind. Usually, it’s a venue, a couple of cocktails, a handful of business cards, and the opportunity to make a few new connections. Effective? Sure. Memorable? Not always.

When our client set out to host their firm’s first marketing + networking event, they wanted to do something different. Rather than relying on the tried-and-true format, they envisioned an event that was not only fun but also gave attendees the opportunity to get to know them in a different context.

With a founder whose career spans both the legal profession and the performing arts, our client saw an opportunity to bring those two worlds together. The result was a networking event that combined live performance with professional networking in a way that reflected both the founder and the firm’s approach.

Instead of centering the event around traditional networking activities, the evening featured live performances to create a more relaxed environment where attendees and members of the legal community could connect naturally.

Our client already had the vision, logo, and event concept and partnered with Kit Friday Consulting to provide the strategic planning, communications support, and the event marketing oversight needed to bring the event to life.

Beyond The Business Card:
Reimagining the Traditional Networking Event

Setting The Stage

Event success can be difficult to evaluate, and the impact is hard to see if success isn’t clearly defined from the outset.

We began our collaboration with a questionnaire and info-gathering meeting that asked our client guiding questions designed to illuminate their firm’s goals and success benchmarks, both for the event and in general.

That shared understanding helped us align every marketing decision with the larger role the event would play within their broader business strategy.

For this engagement, the goal wasn't just filling seats. It was ensuring that every marketing effort supported a larger objective: attracting an audience that aligned with our client’s professional goals.

With that understanding in place, we began establishing the framework that would support the event from the first announcement through post-event follow-up.

Understanding The Audience

For this engagement, the challenge wasn’t simply promoting a performance event. The challenge was ensuring the event reached the people our client most wanted to connect with - members of the legal community, professional colleagues, referral partners, and potential clients.

While entertainment served as the vehicle to bring people together, the event’s larger purpose was to create visibility for our client’s business and strengthen relationships with the professional communities it serves. With those goals in mind, audience alignment became a central consideration in the marketing process.

Rather than casting the widest net possible, we focused our efforts on reaching communities that already had a meaningful connection to their work. This included targeted social media outreach, a strategic email campaign that supported the event from initial announcement through post-event outreach, and direct outreach through the associations and professional organizations where they already had established relationships.

By prioritizing relevance over reach, we were able to support an event that felt intentional from both a marketing and relationship-building perspective.

Behind The Curtain

With event goals established and audience priorities identified, the next step was shifting from planning to execution.

Instead of relying on a handful of promotional posts, we developed a coordinated communications plan designed to build awareness, maintain momentum, and keep the event visible through opening night.

This included a strategic email cadence, targeted social media outreach, promotional assets, event communications, and post-event follow-up, all working together to support the same goals and messaging.

The purpose wasn’t simply to promote an event, it was to create a consistent experience that reflected the client’s vision while allowing them to focus on what mattered most: connecting with attendees and bringing their event to life.

Beyond The Event

One of the reasons we love working with our clients is that, outside of the impressive work they do, they’re fascinating, multi-talented people whose interests extend far beyond their businesses.

This project serves as a reminder that some of the most memorable marketing opportunities come from embracing what already makes a founder and their business distinctive.

If you’re thinking about your own marketing and looking for ways to create more meaningful connections with your audience, we’d love to hear what you’re working on.
